Mamie Pugel - the Spirit of WSA

Each year the National Fraternal Congress of America polls its member societies in search of individuals who have clearly demonstrated the ideals of fraternalism. They seek those special individuals who have dedicated their lives to helping their fellow human beings and have made our world a better place to live.

On September 21, 1995, in Washington, D.C. the NFCA bestowed its highest honor upon Mamie Pugel. True to form, Mamie donated the $1,000 NFCA Fraternalist of the Year award to Family Tree of Colorado..

The Directors, Staff, and Members of WSA Fraternal Life were deeply saddened by her passing, August 29, 2001.

The daughter of WSA pioneer Mary Kogovsek, Mamie was a life long member of WSA Fraternal Life, and dedicated most of her life to helping others. For over 38 years she served as Secretary of Slovan Lodge #3 in Pueblo, Colorado, as a WSA National Director for 32 years and as an Honorary Director from 1997 until her death.

Mamie was honored in 1985 with the Pueblo Sunshine Award, and in 1987 as the Colorado-Wyoming State Fraternal Congress Fraternalist of the Year. An advocate for rights and welfare of the elderly, a lengthy list of causes benefitted from her lifetime of charitable work and fraternalism, including:

  • Nursing Home Residents
  • Home Health Care
  • Elderly Abuse Prevention
  • Social Services State Advisory Council
  • Nursing Home Review Committee
  • Bishop's Guild
  • White House Area on Aging Conference
  • Colorado Governor's Area on Aging Conference
Mamie was also honored with the Colorado Distinguished Service Award for dedication and leadership in improving the quality of life for older adults in Colorado. Until her passing, she remained active with the Senior Resource Development Agency in her home town of Pueblo where she was the driving force in securing a much needed new computer through the WSA Lodge Activity Funding Program.
Mamie Pugel But Mamie is probably best known at WSA for her column in the Fraternal Voice, entitled 'From the Desk of Mamie Pugel'.

Beginning in 1963, Mamie entertained our members each month with news from Slovan Lodge, anecdotes, poems and humorous stories. Mamie always reminded us to value each and every moment in life, and to take time to help the less fortunate.

Her monthly feature easily became the members favorite and remained so until she retired the column, signing off with her standard
'Remember, God loves you and so do I'. It has long been held that at WSA, our most valuable assets are our members.
Mamie Pugel was a beacon to all who knew her or knew of her and a shining example of that philosophy.

Mamie loved WSA, loved life and loved people and our world will be a darker place without her.
